Cracking down on protests is authoritarian
The arrest of Mahmoud Khalil is abhorrent and indicates that this administration will not tolerate any dissent. I am by no means an immigration law expert and am always one to wait for the full story, but recent comments from White House officials, including the President, make it obvious this was a politically motivated arrest. There are now plenty of articles about who Khalil is and it seems his arrest and possible deportation is tied to his activities as a lead negotiator during protests at Columbia University in the spring of 2024.
In no article from that time can I find any mention of Khalil being pro-Hamas or antisemitic. In many instances, Khalil is actually saying the opposite and specifically that "antisemitism ... has no place on campus or in [their] movement". Let me be crystal clear, as of right now, the White House is saying that "the allegation here is not that he was breaking the law" but that he is also a "threat to ... national security interests." As of right now, the only basis for that claim is that he negotiated with Columbia administrators on behalf of student protesters who were all invoking their First Amendment rights.
As with Trump and Republican's effort to ban trans people from existence under the guise of "saving the children", they are now trying to silence those exercising their First Amendment right to protest under the guise of "curbing antisemitism". They do this because both of those things are hard to argue with. We must look beyond the stated reason for Khalil's arrest or the Republican's assault on trans people, and see what their effect is. The effect is that these people are harmed, plain and simple. We must also look at the evidence. Is it true that trans people are trying to brainwash your children? Absolutely not. Trans people are simply trying to exist. Is it true that Khalil protested? Yes, but it has yet to be proven that he is a "threat to .. national security interests" due to protests he took part in a year ago.
Similarly, Khalil's arrest shows that this administration is willing to label almost anything they don't agree with as dissent or terrorism. I started writing this before Trump did his Tesla commercial on the White House lawn and said that protestors and violence against Tesla dealerships would be labeled domestic terrorism. There are many state and federal laws that are well equipped to handle any crimes that might arise out of these mostly peaceful protests. Why would Trump want to label these people, including Khalil, terrorists? He can't handle dissent or opposition.
